Pacific Dataviz Challenge: What is it?

The Pacific Dataviz Challenge is an international competition for everyone—of any age, background or skillset—that encourages storytelling, design, innovation and technical skill in the visualisation of Pacific data.

Participants, individually or as a team, are invited to create data visualisations that highlight important issues or opportunities facing the Pacific region.

Your submission could be an infographic, animation, dashboard, web app, poster, PDF report, drawing—almost anything you can imagine and create.

Powered by the Pacific Data Hub, the foremost portal for Pacific knowledge, the Pacific Dataviz Challenge gives you the opportunity to compete for both bragging rights and prizes from a total pool of $15,000 USD.

Dataviz for Beginners

From data amateurs to data analysts, the Pacific Dataviz Challenge is a competition for all. Young people, artists, students and specialists alike are invited to dive in and develop their data visualisation (‘dataviz’) skills.

The art of representing complex information visually and comprehensibly, dataviz transforms raw numbers into graphs, maps, charts, or other visual forms—telling us a story on trends, patterns and relationships within the data.

Another important aspect to the competition, ‘open data’ refers to data that are publicly available to anyone for any purpose.

Throughout the competition period, we’ll be sharing resources for dataviz beginners—subscribe to stay informed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you can participate as a team and as an individual, and apply to both categories, interactive and static. This means that if you're really motivated, you can submit one data visualisation individually and another one as a team for the interactive category. You can repeat the process with the static category and thus increase your chances of winning a prize through four entries.

Yes, absolutely! You’ll just need to include a signed parental authorisation when registering. If you’re a minor and you win one of the many prizes in the challenge, the money will be transferred to your legal guardian’s bank account.
To encourage young talent from the Pacific to take part, we’ve created a special “Pacific Youth” award of $1,500 USD — available in both the static and interactive categories — and reserved for those born after the year 2000. So don’t hesitate to give it a go!

You must use at least one dataset provided by the organisers on the Pacific Dataviz Challenge website, sourced from the Pacific Data Hub (the Pacific Community's open data platform). You may also incorporate additional datasets to cross-reference and enhance your data visualisation, as long as they are publicly available as open data.

Your dataviz must be created in either English or French. Similarly, you can choose to fill out your registration form in either English or French.

There are no limitations: you can use any tools of your choice!

The challenge opens on Wednesday, 1 June 2025. You have two months to participate and submit your original creation before July 31st at 11:59 PM (GMT+11, New Caledonia time).

This challenge is open to everyone without restrictions. You simply need to submit your data visualisation before 31 July by filling out the form available on the website and using at least one of the datasets provided by the organisers.
People of all ages can participate.
